Abstract
The term “prostatitis” is not a definite nosologic entity, but includes various inflammatory and noninflammatory conditions affecting the prostate. A widely accepted clinical classification system (Drach et al. 1978) has been developed based on the standardized sequential bacteriologic localization technique introduced by Meares and Stamey in 1968, including analysis of expressed prostatic secretions (EPS) for evidence of increased numbers of leukocytes (Table 1). Although this classification system must be considered an outstanding break-through in the rational approach to classifying patients with prostatic inflammation, we still do not fully understand all the complexities of prostatic disease, in particular the etiology and pathogenesis of nonbacterial prostatitis. This may be due to the fact that our diagnostic procedures are still inadequate for many patients. Careful attention should therefore be given to the diagnostic sensitivity and specifity of our examinations and to the exact classification of the inflammation.
