Abstract

In spite of refined diagnostic methods, over half the patients with prostatitis symptoms today are given the diagnosis prostatodynia, because no evidence of a relevant, objective, bacteriological finding can be found (see Brähler and Weidner 1989). It must be assumed that psychopathological or neurotic mechanisms are involved in symptom development, making it especially important to register the symptoms of this group of patients with extreme care. This is partly because the symptoms play a particular role in the diagnosis of prostatitis, but also partly because many of the symptoms involved show a gradual transition into the area of psychosomatic or psychoneurotic complaints.
