Abstract
The long-term nutrition of patients who are unable to take food orally due to pharyngeal or esophageal disease, neurological pathology or other disturbances gives rise to a number of technical and metabolic problems. Exclusively parenteral nutrition leads in a short time to clinically significant alterations in the metabolism and morphology of the digestive organs. Changes in the kinetics of the gall bladder with formation of sludge, disturbances of the bile acid metabolism and pancreatic secretion, villous atrophy and reduction in the activity of brush border enzymes of the small intestine, and catheter-related complications such as thrombosis and infection [1].
