Abstract

Plant diseases caused by phytopathogenic fungi represent an enormous economical hazard. Nevertheless, most interactions between these parasites and their hosts are not well understood mainly due to considerable experimental restrictions. In the past few years, however, considerable progress has been made in this field, mainly due to the availability of a wide range of molecular techniques, which allow new and promising approaches to the understanding of host-parasite interactions. This review cannot represent a comprehensive update of the exponentially expanding literature on this topic, but intends to present an overview and report on trends and highlights, continuing the short update of Meinhardt (1991) in this series.
