Abstract

A prospective randomized trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Valtrac bioabsorbable anastomosis ring (BAR) in elective intraperitoneal colorectal surgery was established in six European centres in 1986. Academic surgical units in Heidelberg, Leuven, Paris, Rotterdam and Malmo and a district hospital in Kingston upon Thames (UK) took part, Ethical committee approval was gained, and all patients gave written informed consent to take part.
