Abstract

We know that the mechanical tightness of a colon anastomosis is guaranteed only by its approximation until day 4 postoperatively (Scheele 1984). Increased collagenase activity in the intestinal wall and other local factors reduce the capacity of the anastomosis tissue to hold the suture material at this early stage of healing (Hawley et al. 1970; Jiborn et al. 1980; Young and Wheeler 1983; Lünstedt and Debus 1990).
