Abstract

This discussion requires structural organization to find a common denominator for a number of contributions that represent a rather wide spectrum of structural and functional aspects of the subcommissural organ (SCO). Since cell biology and biochemistry are a central topic of the following discussion section, in the present context emphasis should be placed on secretory polarity and the neural and vascular pathways of the SCO. Thus, this discussion could be entitled “Signal pathways to and from the SCO.”

For ultrastructural details of the subcommissural organ, see Figs. 1–3.
