Abstract
Bone formation and bone resorption, the two major processes of bone remodeling, are regulated by defined agents and mechanisms. The formation of new bone consists of the production of a new bone matrix by the osteoblast, and its mineralization by, as yet, poorly understood mechanisms. Since the formation of new bone is primarily a function of the osteoblast, agents that regulate bone formation can act by either increasing or decreasing the replication of cells of the osteoblastic lineage or modifying the differentiated function of the osteoblast.
