Abstract

Noise is an important environmental factor which affects construction and engineering, especially in the design of high-speed train systems. For example, noise reduction measures in Japan have been undertaken for an area containing about 32,000 houses and institutions which are affected by Shinkansen system at a cost of about 76 billion yen (Kikuchi, 1988).
