Abstract
Changes in the shape of the intracranial pulse wave have been used to estimate cerebral compliance [2] and have been related to outcome after head injury [6]. The changes in the complex shape of the intracranial pulse wave that occur with changes in ICP have been analyzed by decomposing the pulse wave into its component frequencies using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) [3, 6], as well as by using simpler measures such as pulse amplitude and slope [1]. We have observed that changes in heart rate have a powerful effect on the shape of the intracranial pulse wave, and have studied these changes using an online computerized monitoring system which is described elsewhere in this volume [4].
