Fractures of the distal articular surface of the tibia have a reputation for uncertain outcome regardless of the method of treatment [1, 3, 9]. A combination of fracture configuration [4, 6, 11], metaphyseal crush with instability [2, 8], primary articular cartilage damage [4], and persisting joint surface incongruity [7] all contribute to this reputation (Fig. 1).
