Results of Operative Treatment of Calcaneal Fractures

Major Fractures of the Pilon, the Talus, and the Calcaneus

Abstract

The calcaneum is the most commonly fractured tarsal bone, and to date is still regarded as an enigma for orthopaedic surgeons. Therapeutic options are varied, and one can find support for either aggressive or conservative methods of treatment. The controversy between operative and conservative treatment hinges on the patient’s clinical result, many facets of which are purely subjective in nature. The resultant disability is difficult to establish, as it depends on the patient’s ability to return to premorbid activities. Gait abnormality, pain, and decreased subtalar and ankle range of motion are just a few of the factors that must be considered when evaluating the functional results following these difficult fractures. The confusion regarding treatment options is also the result of inconsistent radiographic methods used to evaluate the fractured os calcis. This paper describes our method of operative treatment of this fracture, with an analysis of the functional results following treatment.
