Abstract
Contemporary history represents the phase of recent history that is consciously experienced by living generations and is the scientific reflection of this period. The boundaries of this most recent period of history are therefore variable. From today’s perspective the beginning of contemporary history extends back to 1917. The entry into the war by the United States of America and the October Revolution in Russia initiated the rise of the leading great powers and the polarization of world politics (Scheurig, 1970).
