Abstract
Abdominal sonography has proven to be of great value in evaluating many abdominal diseases and has over the years become an accepted and effective primary imaging modality. However, conventional abdominal sonography does have its limitations when used in assessing the gastrointestinal tract. Due to the presence of luminal gas within the bowel, which limits a full and detailed evaluation of the bowel wall and bowel lumen, the interpretation of diseases of the bowel tend to be both difficult and inexact. Conventional sonography has therefore played only a subordinate role as a diagnostic procedure for the diagnosis of colon tumors and inflammatory large bowel diseases [1, 2].
