Abstract
This chapter focuses on the methods for analyzing time-dependent phenomena. The main emphasis is laid on the characterization of nonlinear dynamical system behavior. We do not intend to give another more or less complete treatment of what is known at present about nonlinear systems in general, but to classify a representative natural system — low-temperature impact ionization semiconductor breakdown — in the light of nonlinear dynamics. Guided by the results of this experimental situation, we introduce various characterization methods at such a level that any reader should be able to understand the basic arguments without requiring too much knowledge in advance. For a more comprehensive — particularly with respect to theory — introduction to the field of nonlinear dynamics, we refer to other books [3.1–11].
