Therapy of Lyme Neuroborreliosis

  • Chapter
Book cover Aspects of Lyme Borreliosis

Abstract

Certain antibiotics such as penicillin and tetracycline are effective drugs in the treatment of syphilis and other spirochetal diseases. Penicillin has recently been considered as the drug of choice in Lyme neuroborreliosis. In the following chapter, we will critically review data on the treatment of Lyme neuroborreliosis, with the emphasis on clinical outcome and prognosis after treatment with penicillin or other antibiotics such as cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, or doxycycline. The data will be discussed against the background of the antibiotic susceptibility of Borrelia burgdorferi in vitro and the pharmakokinetics of antibiotics concerned.
