Much of the work in computer-based learning has underestimated the role of the learner as an active participant in the midst of some learning activity. The papers in this section by Elliot Soloway et al. and by W. Patrick Dickson et al. take the view that learning and doing are inextricably intertwined; that the learner must be actively engaged in constructing his or her own knowledge; and that adaptive learning environments must support this knowledge construction activity. This view, sometimes termed situated learning, is espoused by Seeley Brown [3] among others.
