Abstract
This chapter is based on various discussions which took place at the Advanced Study Institute in Calgary during July 1990. In particular, this chapter reflects the synthesis sessions presented by Benedict du Boulay, Peter Goodyear, Jim Greer and Ellen Mandinach. The chapter starts by addressing the issue of why synthesis of two traditionally distinct research areas is a worthwhile goal, examines impediments to such a synthesis, and suggests that by addressing our differences, we can begin to understand them and bridge them. To assist in bridging our differences, the chapter contains a discussion of several common themes that are interwoven within the six topics of this book. We also discuss the need for stronger collaboration between the participating research areas. The chapter also contains a discussion of collaboration and research goals, steps we are taking towards success, and steps toward achieving recognition as a field of study.
