Current Status and New Perspectives in Spiral CT

Abstract

Spiral or continuous volume scanning is achieved when the patient is transported through the gantry while computed tomography (CT) data are being acquired simultaneously over a multitude of 360° rotations (Fig. l). It was introduced into clinical practice in 1989 on Somatom Plus scanners [1–5] and gained acceptance immediately. Spiral CT has meanwhile been successfully applied and validated in a large number of clinical studies [6–19]. Such clinical applications are covered in other reports at this conference. Drawbacks were only reported with respect to X-ray power limitations and blurring of the slice sensitivity profiles [5, 20–25]. In this paper we will review the respective aspects of image quality, indicate possible improvements and discuss implications for clinical studies.
