Approximate Boundary Conditions for Diffusion Equation at Interface Between Two Media

Abstract

Ibser and Wheeler (Report C-88) gave a rigorous treatment of the boundary conditions at the interface between two homogeneous multiplying media. This treatment, while it is capable of giving accurate results, is rather laborious to apply. For this reason, it appears worthwhile to describe here a method of adjusting boundary conditions which was used, before Ibser and Wheeler’s work became available, for the calculation of heavy water seeds. While this method does not have the accuracy of Ibser and Wheeler’s method, more exact formulae were available. It is more exact than the treatment underlying the Report C-11 by Breit and Fermi, which is essentially identical to the one used earlier by V. Halban and Kowarski.
