Urban Development for Children Reexploring a New Research Area

  • Chapter
Curiosity and Exploration

Abstract

The field of work presented in this chapter and the resulting research plans for studying “urban development for children” grew out of the pleasure of dealing with the commonplace and watching children “dawdling or hurrying,” for, after all, “they don’t stroll” (Hessel, 1932). For all the spontaneity of youngsters who are growing up, this research project also sprang from the hope that one can plan, nay, shape the circumstantial context.

I think the ordinary is more valuable for the observer. If the interesting is served to him with the explanations that go with it so that he comprehends quickly and simply—that goes down fast. The commonplace, however, first has to be plowed up. (Kiefer, 1990, p. 27; translation by the authors).

The project described in the present chapter was planned and executed in cooperation with two colleagues at the Technical University of Berlin, Heinz Wagner, professor of architecture, and Martin Daub, professor of urban and regional planning. The authors are grateful to them and especially to the city fathers of Herten as well as our translator and editor, David Antal.
