Abstract
An increase in slow activity in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of schizophrenic patients, as compared to healthy subjects, has been rather consistently reported in quantitative EEG studies (Itil et al. 1972; Karson et al. 1987; Miyauchi et al. 1990). Since neuroleptic administration in normal subjects induces an increase of slow activities (Fink 1974), a possible role of drug treatment in producing these findings has been hypothesized. In this connection, it should be pointed out that most of the studies reporting 5 increase in schizophrenia involved unmedicated patients (Itil et al. 1972; Karson et al. 1987), and a decrease of δ activity following neuroleptic administration in schizophrenics has been reported in studies based on a test-retest design (Saletu et al. 1986).
