Clinical Applicability of the Determination of Erythropoietin

  • Conference paper
Pathophysiology and Pharmacology of Erythropoietin

Abstract

The cloning and expression of the human erythropoietin (Epo) gene in mammalian cells has enabled the production of large quantities of recombinant human Epo (rHuEpo). The availability of rHuEpo for antibody production has initiated the use of radioimmunoassays (RIA) and more recently of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for sensitive and accurate determination of Epo in serum. As earlier work was based generally on in vivo bioassay, the question arises as to the correlation between Epo values obtained by different assay methods. Therefore, we compare first the results of Epo measurements by ELISA, RIA, and traditional bioassay in polycythemic mice.
