Abstract

During the last decade the transfer of foreign gene material into plant cells has become routine work in many genetic laboratories and even in university teaching. Most popular discussion of molecular biology deal with its possibilities to create new and profitable organisms. Yet its main impact for the biologist is due to its tremendous power not only to change but to analyze gene structure, function, and regulation. Questions which a decade ago still seemed inaccessible to a molecular analysis were answered some years ago by highly specialized methods which today are available off the shelf as routine procedures for diagnostic purposes. The rapid development of such methods might be compared to the recent revolution in computer technology due to the appearance of personal computers affordable by everyone.
