Zusammenfassung
Die meisten Daten zur Epidemiologie der Herzinsuffizienz sind der Framingham-Studie zu verdanken, in der 5192 Männer und Frauen über 16 Jahre (1949–1966) beobachtet wurden [10, 11, 15]. Die Inzidenz der Herzinsuffizienz verdoppelte sich mit jedem Jahrzehnt und betrug im Durchschnitt pro Jahr 3, 7/1000 für Männer und 2, 5/1000 für Frauen (Tabelle 1; [15]). Wie aus Tabelle 1 zu ersehen ist, ist die Inzidenz für Männer in jeder Altersstufe höher als für Frauen. Dies beruht wahrscheinlich auf der größeren Rate an koronaren Herzerkrankungen bei Männern. Ähnliche Daten zur Inzidenz ergeben sich auch aus Untersuchungen in 2 US Staaten (in Montgomery und Caledonia; [14]). Die Prävalenz der Herzinsuffizienz nimmt parallel zur Inzidenz mit dem Lebensalter zu und beträgt in den USA im Durchschnitt 9–10/1000 [14]. Obwohl die Mortalität durch koronare Herzerkrankung und arterielle Hypertonie abgenommen hat, ist die Sterblichkeit an Herzinsuffizienz in den USA von 1970 bis 1983 mit 8/100000 Männern und 5/100000 Frauen konstant geblieben [6]. Für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind ähnliche Daten zur Prävalenz und Mortalität wie in den USA anzunehmen.
