Seismic Activity at Stromboli (Southern Italy) for the Period 1983–1986

Abstract

A set of seismic data recorded at Stromboli during 1983–1986 is analyzed. The events, which are mainly connected to Strombolian activity, were collected at two seismic stations. Consideration of the analyzed data is made in respect to the following correlation functions: autocorrelation functions of released seismic energy and number of eruptions per hour; cross-correlation functions between the hourly number of eruptions and barometric pressure. Analysis of these correlation functions and comparison of eruption sequences with Poisson distributions suggest the existence of critical activity phases, in which a small disturbance force may trigger the transition from one state to another. The seismic energy flux seems to present a useful parameter to quantify the dynamical eruptive processes of Stromboli.
