Abstract
The rDNA locus in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae consists of approximately 200 tandem copies of a 9.08 kb repeating unit located on the right arm of chromosome XII (reviewed in Warner, 1989). Within each repeat is a 5S rRNA gene and the 18S, 5.8S and 26S rRNA genes transcribed as a 35S RNA precursor (Figure 1). The 5S gene is transcribed by RNA polymerase III and the 35S RNA is transcribed by RNA polymerase I. The orientation of the repeats on the chromosome results in PolIII moving toward the telomere and PolI moving toward the centromere.
