Genetic Determinants for Microcin H47, an Escherichia Coli Chromosome-Encoded Antibiotic

Abstract

A search for antibiotic activities produced by Gram-negative bacteria from Uruguay was performed. Strains isolated from different natural sources were screened and 23 out of 170 were able to inhibit the growth of an E. coli K12 indicator strain. Antibiotic activities were typed following the criteria of Baquero and Moreno (1984). They were classed as colicins when their production was induced with mitomycin, and as microcins when they were not mitomycin-inducible and were able to pass through a cellophane membrane which allows the passage of molecules smaller than 7.000 Da. Thus, fifteen strains producing colicins and eight strains producing microcins were isolated
