A Long Marine Eemian-Weichselian Shelf Record in North Denmark, Scandinavia

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASII,volume 3))

Summary

A long marine shelf record in North Jutland, Denmark comprises deposits of Eemian (isotopic substage 5e), Early Weichselian (isotopic substages 5d-a) and Middle Weichselian (isotopic stages 4–3) age. The 25–60 m thick Eemian unit contains foraminiferal assemblages reflecting boreal-lusitanian conditions and a water depth of about 100 m. Temperature remains high, while water depth decreases about 15 m during the last third of the interglacial. An abrupt faunal change at the Eemian-Weichselian boundary reflects a drop in water depth of at least 50 m and a subsequent drop in temperature of several degrees. Regional tectonic subsidence may also have contributed to this drop in water depth. The decrease in water depth revealed by the assemblages corresponds, however, relatively close to the general drop in sea level registered at the transition between substages 5e and 5d. At present, the time resolution at this boundary is presumably only about 3000 years in North Jutland, but this can be improved considerably via close interval sampling.
