Abstract
Early detection of cancer has been defined in the context of this symposium as: (a) the detection of cancer prestages, (b) the diagnosis of small, localized cancers without metastatic spread, and (c) the early detection of recurrent cancers. The first two of these entities do not cause clinical symptoms; thus, our discussion regards the use of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as screening methods. There are certainly many definitions of screening; that given by Miller (1985) is as follows:
“Screening is the presumptive identification of unrecognized disease or defect by the application of tests, examinations, or procedures that can be applied rapidly.”
From this definition it is clear that neither CT nor MRI can be seriously considered as screening methods despite the marked progress in shortening scanning times in both techniques.
