Abstract

Treatment decisions and the ultimate prognosis of patients diagnosed as having lung cancer depends upon the stage of disease at the time of the diagnosis. Diagnostic techniques include sputum cytology, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, transthoracic fine needle aspiration biopsy and lymph node biopsy. With these techniques, a diagnosis can usually be established without thoracotomy. Once this diagnosis has been determined, it is necessary to stage the disease as accurately as possible in order to decide the best treatment for the patient.
