Abstract
Cellular elements of the immune system orchestrate the host-defense response against invading microorganisms through the production of an array of protein mediators, called cytokines. In this process, cytokines not only direct leukocytic elements against infectious agents, but also modulate the cardiovascular and metabolic response to infection. Generally, the immune response benefits the host’s overall fight against foreign invaders, but as a positive feedback system it can be detrimental to host survival under severe conditions.
