Abstract
Stress proteins of a number of pathogens have been identified as immune targets (Young, 1990). Many lymphocytes bearing γδ T cell receptors (γδ cells) appear to recognize both heterologous and autologous stress proteins (O’Brien etal., 1989). This reactivity of γδ cells may not be a classical immune response to foreign antigen but may rather represent a previously unrecognized surveillance function of the immune system (Born etal., 1990a).
