Abstract
After a short duration of ebb phase or shock phase, the burn patient enters a hypermetabolic state, characterized by an elevated metabolic rate, increased protein catabolism and gluconeogenesis, and loss of body weight. Energy requirements are often high, up to 4000 kcal (16 736kJ) or more per day. Thus vigorous nutritional support is needed in order to prevent complications precipitated by catabolism, and to promote early anabolism and wound healing.
