Abstract
There are two goals when performing clinical defibrillation testing protocols. The first is to verify an adequate safety margin for the patient’s automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD) system. The second is to determine the defibrillation threshold characteristics of that system. In practice, one can accomplish the first goal without addressing the second. However, given the programmable nature of current AICD devices and their longer life, it has become more important to do both: to establish the device safety margin by determining the patient’s defibrillation threshold.
