Abstract

Acidification of surface waters has now been demonstrated unequivocally in Britain and over a far wider area of the country than was hitherto thought. Incontrovertible palaeoecological proof from almost all areas of upland Britain has in particular underlined the extent, and more importantly, the recent (post-1850) timescale of acidification. It was this advance in understanding together with mounting evidence of loss from fish stocks that led to the decision by the electricity supply industry to invest in pollution control measures. However the extent to which these reductions will influence the pH of surface waters is a key question. Although encouraging signs have been observed that effects may be reversible in some areas, this will probably not be the case for all systems. Modelling studies in particular point to the fact that current emission reduction plans are insufficient to halt, let alone reverse, acidification in many areas.
