Abstract

More than 1500 monoterpenoid indole alkaloids are known up till now which are biosynthesized via the condensation of tryptamine with the monoterpenoid iridoid secologanin. The principles involved have been discussed in Prog Bot 42:96 ff, and 48:151 ff. New results have been obtained preferably with the alkaloids of Rauwolfia serpentina and Catharanthus roseus as well as with the quinoline alkaloids of Cinchona.
