Abstract

The modern sedimentation of sporomorphs on the Tibetian Plateau up until now has not been analyzed comprehensively, though Gaur and Kala (1984) reported on the aerobiology of a Himalayan alpine zone in Rudranath, India. Yet here, the pollen rain of only 2 months was studied. Ibis poor situation concerning our knowledge on modern pollen spectra-forming processes of transport and sedimentation of sporomorphs holds true for most of the Tibetian mountainous systems and for China proper (Li 1988; Liu 1988; for the Ka kitu; northeast Tibet: Beug 1987; for the Wakhan-Pamir Afghanistan: Borten- schlager and Patzelt 1987). Yet some information may be obtained for Eastern Tian Shan in the headwaters of the Urumchi River, where glacier ice was investigated according to pollen analysis (Zhou et al. 1981). Moreover, this problem was investigated repeatedly in high mountain systems and intramontane basins of Soviet Asia. The older literature can be found in Frenzel (1967). Since then, Grigina (1973) studied forest pollen spectra in pe- riglacial regions of the Tian Shan. Mal’gina (1971) investigated surface pollen samples in Central Mongolia, and Malaeva (1981) the fluvial sediments in eastern Transbaikalia and eastern Mongolia. This is worth mentioning since in these regions and in Central Siberia as well the fossil pollen flora of river sediments is studied repeatedly, though the analytical pollen data of these types of sediment are often strongly influenced by secondary transport processes. Ivanova and Glukhovskaya (1987) reported on the pollen flora of modern surface samples within the southeastern Mongolian Altai, and Devyatkin et al.
