The Close Circumstellar Environment of Young Stellar Objects

Accretion and Winds

Part of the book series: Reviews in Modern Astronomy ((MOD.ASTRONOMY,volume 3))

Abstract

Young stellar objects (“YSOs”) are characterized by a wide variety of activity phenomena and a strong interaction with their environment, on a wide range of spatial scales. I review the solar-like activity in T Tauri stars, and the X-ray and radio [cm] evidence for extended magnetic structures (≲ 10 R*). I then describe the close circumstellar material (≲ 1000 AU) recently associated with a fraction of these stars and with objects embedded in molecular clouds: circumstellar accretion disks and their associated boundary layers, ionized and neutral winds. Recent mm data, in conjunction with IR data, suggest that accretion disks have complex structures, which evolve on timescales ∼ a few 105 to ∼ a few 107 yrs, and are probably the result of various gravitational instabilities. A tentative unified picture emerges, linking magnetic fields, accretion disks, and mass-loss phenomena up to the much larger spatial scales of molecular outflows (several 104 AU). The possible relevance of this new picture for the origin of the solar system is pointed out.
