Biology of Antarctic Fish

Abstract

The main fish species found in the catches of the Southern Ocean fishery since the beginning of exploitation in the 1970s is the channichthyid Champsocephalus gunnari (41.89% of the 2 678 100 tonnes reported between 1970 and 1989). Two main fishing grounds are known, the South Georgian and Kerguelen shelves, situated in the Atlantic and the Indian sectors respectively. The species is also recorded from other areas: South Shetland, S. Orkney, S. Sandwich, Bouvet, Heard Islands, and some submarine elevations near South Georgia and the Kerguelen/Heard shelves. However, it is notable that the species is absent between Bouvet and Kerguelen/Heard Islands and beyond. The distance, more than 2500 miles between the two latter islands, favors a concept regarding the separation of Indian and Atlantic populations. Differences reported in meristic character values (Kock 1980; Sosinski 1981) seem significant enough to consider the current impossibility in the meeting of the populations.
