Computed Tomographic Evaluation of the Cervical Carotid Artery

Conference paper

Abstract

High-resolution computed tomography (CT) of neck vessels, following the intravenous administration of a contrast medium, permits a low-risk evaluation of carotid lesions. The images demonstrate with great precision atheromatous plaque formations, including intramural and extramural histopathologic plaque complications. With this method one can image stenosis of the lumen, ulceration, occlusion, calcification, and subintimal plaque hemorrhages. Dissecting hematomas of the vascular wall may be observed too.
