Similarities of Total Disc Parameters for Glaucoma-like and Open-Angle Glaucoma Discs Matched by Optic Disc Area Size

Abstract

We matched 17 eyes of patients with open-angle glaucoma with 17 eyes of patients with glaucoma-like discs by disc area size. We found no significant difference between the two groups for the total disc with respect to cup volume, area, depth, neuro-retinal rim area, slope and area of pallor. However, a significant difference was obtained between the two groups for retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measured at the disc rim for the total disc. The eyes with glaucoma-like discs had a significantly greater retinal nerve fiber layer thickness than the eyes with open-angle glaucoma. These results suggest that patients with glaucoma-like discs may be some variant of open-angle glaucoma.
