Abstract

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is embracing new principles and tools to meet the challenge of nitrate management. We are adopting the fundamental philosophy that less nitrate usage is better than more. In addition, we are using innovative tools, including wellhead protection as an alternative to treatment at the tap, geographic targeting, demonstration and education, and economic incentives and disincentives.
