Abstract
Up to this point in this volume, it has always been assumed that knowledge can be expressed as a collection of symbolic structures in a formal language, with formal mechanisms for deriving new knowledge from the available one. This Chapter provides one important extension to this view, by highlighting that said structures may have attributes, qualifying the validity resp. applicability of a given structure in given situations. More precisely, uncertainty is one such important attribute especially in reasoning systems coping with economic, financial and business problems.
