Abstract

Progress in modern oncological treatment has led to a growing number of cancer patients requiring long-term palliative and supportive care. Thus, the success of cancer therapy is no longer measured exclusively in terms of recurrence-free survival and overall survival time. Increasingly, the quality of life of these chronically ill cancer patients is also considered to be an important gauge for successful therapy [1,4,8]. Particularly for patients with incurable cancer, there is a growing demand for personal needs to be taken care of and for the remaining life span to be made pain-free. In accordance with this demand, the majority of cancer patients are keen to leave hospital as soon as possible and to return to their homes and families.
