Abstract

Rotationplasty according to Borggreve [1] and above-knee amputation combined with adjuvant chemotherapy can be used alternatively in certain cases of osteosarcoma of the distal femur [2, 5, 7, 8]. However, rotationplasty preserves the intact distal leg with normal mechanical function of the ankle joint, serving as a knee substitute, and normal sensitivity of the foot. This provides an approximately normal gait pattern after adaptation to the rotation of the ankle and foot and to the shortening of the leg.
