Complications in Hemipelvic Resection/Allograft Reconstruction for Bone Sarcomas: Are They Prohibitive to Limb Salvage?

  • Conference paper
Limb Salvage

Abstract

Primary malignant bone tumors of the pelvic acetabular region present as difficult management problems for the orthopaedic surgeon. Although the option of limb salvage is appealing, the area of involvement is often adjacent to major neurovascular structures which are violated by the soft tissue mass of the sarcomatous lesion. Loss of the sciatic nerve will often yield a limited, functionless, lower extremity. These considerations lead to the management option of a formal hemipelvectomy [4, 15,24].
