The Biosynthesis of the Endothelins

No sooner had Yanagisawa and his colleagues established the amino acid sequence of endothelin-1, than they began investigating the biosynthetic pathways involved in its production. From the very start they assumed that since endothelial cells contain few secretory granules, the polypeptide must be produced within the endothelial cells by de novo synthesis. This is quite different from the situation which applies to the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) which, after being synthesized in the atrial cardiocytes, is stored there in granules for subsequent release (de Bold et al. 1981).
