General Aspects in the Use of Medical Textiles for Implantation

Medical Textiles for Implantation

Abstract

Textile structures play a major role in biomedical engineering in general, and especially at devices to be implanted. In the early fifties, the use of textiles for the replacement of blood vessels opened a new area for medical textiles. Voorhes found 1952 /1,2/ in animal tests, that porous woven fabrics were covered by an endothelium-like cell-layer. He concluded, that the ingrowth of fibroblasts coming from the surrounding tissue, would be possible, forming a base for the growth of endothelium at the inner surface of vascular grafts.
