Abstract
Scalp recorded short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) to stimulation of the posterior tibial (PTN), peroneal (PN) and sural (SN) nerves at the ankle and common peronal nerve (CPN) at the knee have been described [1, 3, 7–9]. However, SSEP to stimulation of these different lower extremity nerves have not been obtained and compared in the same individual, so that similarities and differences in the waveform characteristics and scalp topography of these SSEP have not been systematically investigated. Therefore, we obtained SSEP to stimulation of the PTN, PN, and SN at the ankle and the CPN at the knee in eight normal subjects. The configuration, amplitude, scalp topography, and intersubject variability of these potentials were compared. The study was carried out to obtain information concerning the generator sources of these potentials.
